This is about Victorian law. Each state and territory has its own law on this, and the steps and services are different. If you live outside Victoria, see Help in other states.
What you need to know
Victorian government bodies and councils have to follow the law and respect your human rights. If one makes a decision about you that you think is wrong, you can ask for it to be reviewed, or complain about how you were treated.
Time limits are short and the right path depends on who made the decision. We can help you work out where to go and what to say.
- Always ask the agency to review its own decision first.
- VCAT reviews many Victorian decisions.
- The Victorian Ombudsman is free but cannot look at Victoria Police or court decisions.
- Victoria Police and councils are public authorities under the Victorian Charter of Human Rights, and must act in line with human rights.
- You can use FOI to get documents about you from government agencies.
